You’ve had a great night with friends. You’ve been sitting around talking, while having some appies and glasses of wine. Before you know it, it’s the wee hours of the morning. You’re too tired to clean things up, so you just leave everything, including the wine glasses. By the time you get around to cleaning them, the wine residue has dried, and they’re looking a little worse for wear. So, what’s the best way to get these glasses sparkling again?

Cleaning And Drying Glassware

Hand Washing versus Dishwasher

The dishwasher method is gaining ground on hand washing purists. There have been many advances in dishwasher technology, and glass manufacturers are now making glass stems much more sturdy and likely to survive a trip to the dishwasher. It’s best to leave the hand washing for any traditional crystal like Waterford or Stuart. Those glasses could suffer in the dishwasher. If you have looked into any home cleaning packages lately, perhaps one of the things you could ask about is having your crystalware washed. Even with the advances of dishwashers, wine enthusiasts often choose to hand wash their wine glasses.

Hand Washing Tools

If you do opt to hand wash your wine glasses, or any other delicate glassware, you really should have the proper tools. Some bottle brushes might do the trick. Try to find one with gentle bristles that could squeeze into any shaped glass. As for using dish soap, look for a mild one without any heavy fragrances. Purists would say to use just hot water, but often that is not enough to rid glasses of residue.

Towel Drying

If you choose to dry your glassware, you should try to find a towel that won’t leave fuzzies on the glasses. Old school towels, often called sack towels, are a good choice. Microfiber cloths also do a good job and dry quickly. Whatever you do, don’t let water spot dry on your glasses, because it may cause permanent blemishes.

Hints:

  • Scrub the rims carefully and any areas with smudges;
  • Use about one tablespoon of bleach in a gallon of warm water to sterilize the glasses after washing, and rinse well.

Companies who offer home cleaning packages may have more helpful hints like these for cleaning those more delicate items in your home. Giving them a call to see what they have to offer could save you time and trouble.

Dishwashers can get pretty filthy if not cleaned out properly, and on a regular basis. There is a certain irony that an appliance used to clean can get so dirty, but irony does nothing to mitigate a problem. Fortunately, there is a relatively easy way to clean your dishwasher, and to keep it sparkling, so it can do its job properly. The following are some handy tips you might want to put to the test.

Cleaning A Dishwasher The Right Way

Remember to Clean the Filter

Having a dirty dishwasher filter translates into not so clean dishes. A filter is the perfect grime catcher. The filter, usually at the bottom of the inside, can be unscrewed and soaked in warm, soapy water. Leave it for about 10-15 minutes. If there’s food gunk still hanging around, gently scrub it off with a toothbrush or other small brush. The filter is fragile, so be mindful when cleaning it. Once you’re happy with how it looks, put it back in its spot.

Deodorize Using Vinegar

A clean smelling dishwasher means clean smelling dishes. Vinegar is great for deodorizing and making things smell fresh. Pour a cup of white vinegar into the bottom of an empty dishwasher. Turn the machine on a heavy cycle and let it run through. Your dishwasher should look and smell brand new afterwards.

Deodorize Using Baking Soda

Baking soda is a terrific cleaner. For an extra clean smelling dishwasher, sprinkle about a cup of baking soda into the bottom of the appliance and let it be overnight. Run a cycle on empty in the morning and you’ll see and smell a big difference.

Scrub away Any Leftover Grime

If after all that you still spot a few less than sparking spots, perhaps around the seal or in various crannies, use a new toothbrush to reach those tight spots where extra debris could be hiding. Scrub using soap and water, or make a paste out of baking soda and water. This is sure to get all those hard-to-reach spots gleaming in no time.

Alternatives

Baking soda and vinegar are just two things that will do a great job cleaning your dishwasher. Borax is also highly recommended, as is using some bleach if you spot any mold in your machine. Mold is really hard to combat, but bleach seems to do the trick.

Keeping your dishwasher clean is the best way to combat gunk and odour. After all, you don’t want the machine that cleans your dirty dishes to be nastier than the dishes they’re cleaning.

The decorations aren’t the only things that you’ll want to be sparkling during the festive season. You’ll want your home gleaming, too, and ready for all the family and friends who are likely to drop by to share in some holiday cheer. Here are some tips you might use to keep your home snow white clean during the holidays.

Keeping Your House Clean During The Holidays

  1. Start off Fresh
Giving your home a really good cleaning prior to the festivities starting will help you keep it looking wonderful the entire holiday season. If you’re pressed for time, you might want to consider getting the experts in for a one time house cleaning. It’s a gift you’ll be glad you gave yourself! It will also keep you motivated to keep things neat and tidy.

  2. Clear the Clutter
You know those boxes sitting in your utility room that you’ve been meaning to take to the thrift shop? Well, now is the time to do that! The more items that you can get rid of that you’re not using or that have outlived their purpose for you and your family, the better!

  3. Quality, Not Quantity in Holiday Decorations
Overdoing the tinsel can just make things look tacky. Choose holiday decorations that are tasteful. A beautifully appointed Christmas tree, perhaps some garland and sparkling decorations on the mantel, and a wreath on the front door is all you’ll need.

  4. All Things in Their Own Place
When you take something out to use it, be sure to put it back once you’re done. Get kids to put their toys away. Put away any craft items you’ve been using or cooking appliances you’ve dug out to make those festive goodies.

  5. Let There Be Light
Show off your clean, organized abode by letting as much natural light in as possible. Pull the curtains back and roll up the shades. Sunlight makes spaces feel warm and inviting—just the kind of feeling you want to have during the holidays.

  6. Make a Cleaning Schedule
If you have someone come in for a one time house cleaning, make sure you keep things in order by scheduling times to give your home a quick cleaning. There are chores that can’t be put off for long, like laundry and doing dishes. Staying on top of these things will allow you to enjoy the holiday season without stressing about a messy house.

Having the right cleaning products at home during the cold months means cleaning is made much easier. In addition to cleaning products, there are things you can do when the cold winds begin to blow to keep your home warm, with clean air circulating properly. Here are some tips on products to have, and what to do with them, as winter weather approaches.

Essential Winter Cleaning

  1. Lint-Free Cloths
With everything so full of static in the cold months, the last thing you want is to be using a lint-ridden cloth to clean or dust. Have a multi-purpose cleaning cloth handy for every room. Cleaning is a cinch if you have the right supplies nearby.
  2. Do Things Daily
Daily habits are a good thing. For instance, putting away the dishes after they’re dry and making your bed every morning are good habits. You’ll save yourself from having a lot of work all lumped together at the end of the week. It’s also a good habit to have things like paper towels at hand in case of spills. If cleaning isn’t your forte or you’re pressed for time, finding a company that offers home cleaning packages might be a good option for you.
  3. Spray Bottles Filled with Essential Oil Water
Nothing lifts the mood of a dark, stale room in the winter better than a spritz of essential oil infused water. You can use a few drops of any essential oil you love the smell of. Lavender is particularly soothing, while eucalyptus is fresh smelling and deodorizing. Citrus scents like lemon or orange also perk up a space.
  4. One Deep Cleaning Every Month
No one likes to pull out furniture and appliances to clean underneath and behind them, but doing so about once a month in the cold months will have you breathing easier, and your home smelling much more pleasant. If you want to be environmentally friendly, there are loads of products on the market today that aren’t harmful to you or your pets. You can even make your own. Water and vinegar is a great cleaner. Many people take advantage of professional cleaning services for a regular deep cleaning.
  5. Get Ready for Spring
Winter doesn’t last forever. Keeping your home spic and span will make the time seem like it’s flying. Round about the end of February turn your thoughts to spring. If you get a few sunny days, open a window or two for a while to get some fresh air in. Get rid of some winter items, including old products that have been hibernating in your cupboards.

Life gets busy. Between work and family demands, there is precious little time left. If you’re finding it hard to squeeze in the time to give your home a proper cleaning, you might want to look into getting a quote on customized cleaning services.

Using Professional Cleaning Services

Essentially, how often you choose to use a professional cleaner depends upon how busy your life is, and whether or not you can (or want to) allot the time needed to clean your house yourself. Here is some information that will help you make a decision on whether or not to hire a cleaning pro.

What Is Your Free Time Worth to You?

Businesses that offer customized cleaning services have indicated that there are different types of clients: those who have cleaners come in every week or once a month, and those who simply want an occasional deep cleaning. These are the kinds of things you’ll want to iron out with a cleaner beforehand. If you have children and pets you may want to choose a weekly cleaning option, or every couple of weeks, depending upon your budget. Many families choose twice a month, with a deep cleaning a couple of times a year. A deep cleaning involves cleaning hard-to-reach places like behind appliances, under furniture, and so on.

Even Daily Is an Option

For families that are very busy, or perhaps have very small children, a daily housekeeper might help enormously, at least for a while. This may also be an option for elderly people who might need extra help with daily cleaning tasks. A cleaner who comes in each day can stay on top of things like doing dishes, and perhaps even doing laundry.

The Dent in Your Bank Statement

Most companies are willing to cut you a good deal if you have them in more than once a month. There are some variables to consider, such as the size of your home, and what exactly you want your cleaner to do. Some companies charge by the square foot. For instance, if the company charges $1 for every 10 square feet, and you have a 2,000-square-foot home, you’ll be paying $200 for each cleaning session.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Make sure the cleaning company you hire is insured.
  • Ask about the products they’ll be using, or even if they have products at all. You may be required to supply them.
  • Ask if they look into the backgrounds of their employees.
  • Check out any reviews they may have, or even ask for references.

Back to school time usually makes parents jump for joy. It’s a time when kids are out of the house, so you have time to give your home a good cleaning, without your munchkins under foot. To make cleaning organized and efficient, here is a checklist you might want to use before getting out the mop and bucket.

Back To School Cleaning

  1. Purge

Go through your things and get rid of items you don’t need or use anymore. Sell them at a garage sale, give them to friends who could use them, or donate them to charity. Every home has some of these items. Keeping a house clean is easier when clutter is non-existent.

  2. Start in the Kids’ Rooms

Let your children help out in their own rooms. Giving them choices as to how they would like to organize their stuff may entice them to keep their spaces relatively clean. Make sure everything they need in the morning is at the ready, so there’s no excuse for being late.

  3. Mudrooms and Coat Closets

School means backpacks, lunch packs, sports gear, and new shoes need places to be stored. Making space in your mudroom and coat closet will give these things a place where they can always be easily found.

  4. Kitchen, Laundry Room and Eating Spaces

Give the countertops in your kitchen a good scrub. Do the same for your microwave and oven, there may be residue from too many pizzas and pizza pops. Clean out the fridge and get rid of any old items that are past their due dates. Scrub out the washer with vinegar water and wipe out your dryer drum. If you don’t enjoy cleaning appliances, then you may want to hire someone for a one time house cleaning.

  5. A Floor Fix

Now is the time to give your carpets and tiles a good cleaning, to rid them of the dirt and grime your kids have tracked in all summer. If this is something you really would rather not do yourself, call a service for a one time house cleaning, and ask if they would include carpet and floor steam cleaning.

  6. Doormats Keep Dirt at Bay

Using mats at entranceways will reduce the amount of dust and dirt that’s tracked into your home. Make sure to give them a good shaking out and vacuuming every so often. Place a shoe rack beside the mat, and insist your family members leave their shoes at the door.

A really good housekeeper is, well … a keeper. But you need to know the questions to ask a potential cleaner and what to look for during an interview. Here are some questions you can ask and tips you can use to help you make the right choice when it comes to hiring someone for housekeeping services and keeping your home gleaming.

Questions For A Potential Housekeeper

  1. Make Sure the Person Understands the Role

Before getting down to business, let the person you’re interviewing know exactly what the position entails. Perhaps you could start the interview process with a job description and ask if there are any questions regarding what would be involved.

  2. Spend Some Time Getting to Know the Person

You could start off with a few questions to get a feeling for the person’s personality. After all, the person should be a good fit for your family, not just a good housekeeper. Consider asking the following questions:

    • What are you most proud of accomplishing as a housekeeper?
    • What do you like to do in your spare time?
    • Describe what a clean home means to you.
    • What are some of your strengths?
    • If you had to improve something about yourself, what would it be?
  3. Evaluate Your Candidate’s Housekeeping Skills

The following questions will provide you with information about the candidate’s skills as a housekeeper, so that you can judge if they will be able to keep your particular home up to your particular standards.

    • What do you like about your job?
    • What makes you a good housekeeper?
    • What do you charge?
    • Do you use your own supplies, or are they provided for you?
    • What do you enjoy about cleaning?
    • Will you clean windows?
    • How do you feel about pets?
    • When and how often would you be available?
    • Are you comfortable working while others are at home?
  4. Ensure the Tasks You Want Done Will Get Done

These questions will give you a good sense of the candidate’s experience and willingness to do the more difficult jobs around the house.

    • Do you do laundry and iron?
    • Will you clean large appliances both inside and outside?
    • Will you take out garbage?
    • Will you wash walls?
    • Will you clean all parts of the bathroom?
    • What are some things you won’t do?
  5. Ask if the Candidate Has Other Applicable Skills

There may be things your interviewee can do that you didn’t realize or didn’t think of asking. These questions may give you some insight.

    • Would you be able to cook occasionally?
    • Do you like children, and would you be able to watch them from time to time?
    • Are you available to work evenings and/or weekends?
    • Are you able to do any heavy cleaning that requires lifting or moving heavy objects?

Hospitals are full of sick people wanting to get better, so having the cleanest surroundings possible is crucial. Germs like sickness and sickness likes germs. They feed off each other. Keeping hospital rooms and common areas clean with regular housekeeping services is healthy for patients, visitors, and hospital staff.

Hospitals Need Housekeeping Services

Infectious Diseases

Some diseases can spread like wildfire. Housekeeping services in a hospital help to control the spread of those diseases. Bacteria is hearty. It can survive in nearly every place and space. It can be found on bedrails, curtains, call buttons—everywhere. And it survives for a long time. If someone touches these surfaces and fails to wash his or her hands, the bacteria spreads to every area he or she touches. In fact, “superbugs,” or antibiotic-resistant bacteria, can survive for months on surfaces. These potentially deadly pests have also found their way into hospitals.

Prevention Is Where It’s at

To keep a healthcare environment like a hospital free from infections, cleanliness is paramount. Having housekeeping services staff working hand in hand with other staff and patients can keep infections out. Housekeepers play an essential role in the overall environmental health of a hospital.

Cleaning vs. Disinfecting

Cleaning and disinfecting aren’t the same at all. Cleaning should happen before disinfecting. When housekeeping staff clean, they use soap, water, enzymes, and a scrubbing action to remove dirt, dust, and foreign matter from objects.

Disinfection won’t be adequate if the cleaning isn’t up to par. As a rule of thumb, hospital housekeeping services usually use this formula when cleaning: No smudges, no dust, no odours, no spots equals clean. Disinfectants are used to sanitize clean areas. Sanitizers are usually chlorine, phenol or iodine based and are usually used in food prep locations like kitchens where food-borne pathogen levels must at safe levels.

Housekeeping Services and Infection Prevention

In recent years, healthcare professionals and patients have seen an increased risk of diseases like typhoid, cholera and hepatitis B. Prevention of infection with these and other diseases is tantamount in a hospital. Housekeeping services staff realize these threats are increased if the hospital environment isn’t kept as clean and as sanitized as possible. They have one of the most important jobs in a hospital setting.

Cut Allergies With These 6 Cleaning Tips

Dust bunnies sometimes have a life of their own. Not only are they unsightly when they’re hopping all over your home, but they can really cause misery if you or other family members are allergic to them, especially on cleaning days. For those with allergies, here are some tips to make cleaning a little more bearable.

  1. Fashion a Schedule for Cleaning Times

Allergies are nasty any time, but if you spread out your cleaning time so you only have to do a few things every day, it might make symptoms less problematic. Keeping your home clean is essential to keeping allergies at bay.

  2. Make Your Vacuum Your Best House Buddy

Vacuuming regularly (at least a couple times each week) will keep dust to a minimum. Make sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter, which will trap particles you can’t even see. Vacuuming is better than sweeping, which just tends to move dust around. Remember to vacuum curtains. They’re great hangouts for allergens.

  3. Give Your Home a Weekly Dusting

Just like expert cleaners who offer home cleaning packages, make sure to use a duster or lint-free cloth (microfiber is a good choice) to dust furniture and other items where dust can collect. This should be done at least once a week to keep allergens at bay.

  4. Wash Sheets Weekly

Your bed sheets aren’t safe from things that can make you feel nasty if you have allergies. They’re havens for pet dander (if you have pets), pollen, dried skin, etc. Washing them every week will cut down on possible allergens that will stuff you up or make you sneeze. Vacuuming your duvet and mattress will also be a big help.

  5. A Dry Bathroom Is a Good Bathroom

Dampness and allergies love each other, so having a wet bathroom is not conducive to keeping allergy symptoms to a minimum. Those businesses which offer home cleaning packages know that a damp bathroom can lead to mold, and mold is unhealthy for everyone. The shower stall, walls and floors should be wiped down after each shower. Leave the bathroom door open so the space can air out. Leaving the shower curtain to one side will also help the shower area air out and dry.

  6. Declutter

The more things you have in your home that you don’t use, the more dust you’ll have. Remove items that are just sitting around. Sell them, donate them, or give them to friends. Shelves full of knick knacks covered in dust won’t do your allergies any good.
